The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has registered a case against US-based Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun after he announced a reward of Rs 11 crore for 'Sikh soldiers' to prevent Prime Minister Narendra Modi from hoisting the national flag on Independence Day.
According to the FIR, Pannun, who serves as the general counsel for the banned outfit " Sikhs For Justice" (SFJ), made the announcement on August 10 during a "Meet the Press" event at the Lahore Press Club in Pakistan.
SFJ promotes the creation of a separate Sikh state, and its leader Pannun has been declared a terrorist by the Indian government.
Addressing the gathering through a video link from Washington, Pannun said, “Rs 11 crore reward to Sikh soldiers who will stop Modi from unfurling the tricolour at the Red Fort in Delhi.”
The agency said the Khalistani extremist also unveiled a map of a proposed Khalistan at the event, including Punjab, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, and claimed that the SFJ had formed a “Shaheed Jatha” to fight against India.
“By doing so, he has indulged in activities for disrupting sovereignty, territorial integrity and security of India and spreading disaffection among Sikhs against India,” the FIR stated.
The case has been filed under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Alongside Pannun, “other unknown persons” have also been named in the complaint.
The Union home ministry, which directed the NIA to investigate, observed in its order that “Pannun, a designated terrorist and general counsel of the SFJ, hosted a ‘Meet the Press’ event at the Lahore Press Club on August 10, where he addressed journalists through a video link from Washington, primarily focussing on the rejection of India’s sovereignty over Punjab and the promotion of Khalistan.”
During the address, Pannun also unveiled the SFJ’s new “Delhi Banayga Khalistan” referendum map, which incorporates Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi. The ministry added that “having regard to the gravity of the offence, its national and international ramifications and the need to unearth the larger conspiracy, it is required to be investigated by the National Investigation Agency.”
Pannun's aide arrested
Meanwhile in Canada, Ontario Provincial Police arrested Gosal, 36, in Whitby on Friday for careless use of a handgun and other offences, Global News reported citing court documents. Gosal appeared in court in Oshawa on Monday and was charged along with Arman Singh, 23, of Toronto, and Jagdeep Singh, 41, of New York.
Gosal, who took over a Khalistan referendum campaign after Hardeep Singh Nijjar was killed in Surrey, B.C., is also a member of SFJ and a key aide of Pannun, as per media reports.
