I'm a bookworm, but if the story doesn't grab me, I quickly lose interest and get distracted. In recent years, it's taken me about three months to finish a book because they didn't hook me in fast enough, which put me off reading.
That was until this year when I stumbled upon Freida McFadden, an American thriller writer who also happens to be a practising physician specialising in brain injury. Freida isn't her real name, but she released her first novel in 2013. However, I only started reading her books this year when The Housemaid started trending on social media.
Now, I can't get enough of her work, having devoured around 15 of her books this year.
The Housemaid is the first in a four-part series. It's a psychological thriller centred around a housemaid named Millie, who starts working for the affluent Winchester family, reports the Express.

It's been a hit, selling over two million copies, and the incredibly twisty plot had me hooked from the first chapter — a rare occurrence indeed.
In fact, this book was so gripping that I read it in two sittings and finished it in just two days.
I've also read the second in the series, The Housemaid's Secret, which continues to follow Millie on her adventures, and it was equally captivating.
After getting through five of Freida's books, I thought I'd start predicting the twists and turns in the novels, but I just couldn't, which kept me engrossed in the book.
You can snap up The Housemaid for a bargain £3 from Amazon or £7.99 from Waterstones or TGJones.
A recent gripping read was Never Lie, a tale of newlyweds Tricia and Ethan on the hunt for their dream home.
They believe they've found it in a secluded manor once owned by Dr Adrienne Hale, a famous psychiatrist who mysteriously disappeared years ago. The twist isn't revealed until the very end, making it an enthralling read.
Never Lie is available for just £3 from Amazon or Waterstones for £9.99 and comes highly recommended if you're stuck in a reading rut.
I must give credit to the author, Freida, for pulling me out of my reading slump, introducing me to a new genre, and reigniting my love for reading.
Other captivating reads from this author include The Tenant, The Inmate, The Boyfriend, and The Surrogate Mother.
If you're a fan of fast-paced, engaging thrillers, you'll thoroughly enjoy Freida's books.
