Ruben Amorim offered sack verdict as Man Utd owners 'don't want to admit another error'

Alan Shearer has claimed Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim is clinging onto his job purely because the owners are reeling over previous mistakes. The pressure is mounting on the Portuguese gaffer after their latest humiliation against Brentford became yet another nightmare in his torrid reign.

The former Newcastle legend has suggested that the Old Trafford chiefs are reluctant to pull the trigger, having already faced a barrage of criticism for axing staff, hiking ticket prices and brief tenure ofDan Ashworth, who departed after just five months. After Saturday's crushing blow in London, United languish in 14th spot with their agony deepened by the Bees climbing above them following their 3-1 triumph, though the MEN has reported that he still has the board's support.

Amorim is facing renewed pressure after their latest capitulation during a campaign that has already seen his tactics and stubborn refusal to abandon his system at Old Trafford questioned.

Shearer made comparisons to Graham Potter, who was brutally axed by West Ham just days before their Everton clash, and argued the ex-Sporting CP chief survives only because of United's ownership blunders.

"Brentford without a doubt had their plan, he was 'outschooled' by Keith Andrews," he said on the Rest is Football podcast.

"What Brentford did, they did well, that will be his downfall unfortunately for him, he's not going to budge - he's right and everyone is wrong.

"I know they really worked last week for their win but it was back to normality.

"When you look at Graham Potter at West Ham, 26 per cent win percentage, and been fired for that, he's got 27 per cent win rate despite the fortunes that have been spent.

"Currently, the last time I checked they're 14th despite all the money being spent. I genuinely believe the owners or the people owning the club have made that many errors in the last 18 months, it would look terrible to admit another error and sack.

"Whether it's Dan Ashworth, the ticket increase, people losing their jobs, the new stadium, paying for Dan Ashworth then sacking him then going hellbent on a manager, paying a fee for him, demanding he comes now rather than when he wanted to come to them for them to go, 'Sorry, we're firing him, then paying out a huge chunk.'".

"I genuinely believe that's one of the reasons why [Amorim's] still there. They're not getting any better, they look miles off it and if he's not going to change, which he says he's not, that will be his downfall."

Amorim's success rate sits at a measly 27.3 per cent - the worst of any boss to follow Sir Alex Ferguson - having claimed victory in merely nine Premier League fixtures from a possible 33.

Despite managing to secure seven draws, United have suffered a significant number of defeats (17), and are now looking to recover from their lacklustre campaign last season, with their sights set on qualifying for the Champions League.
