China could soon dominate the UK consumer vehicle market with one thing proving to be the standout feature, technology. I've driven several Chinese vehicles in recent years, from BYD's Atto 2 and Atto 3, to the MG EV4 and even Range Rover rival Jaecoo.
I've also attended launch events for Chery's latest car range, the Tiggo 7 and 8, and have seen vehicles from Omoda, GWM ORA and Leapmotor up close. Technology has often been an area where China really stands out, and it's no surprise that Chinese hybrid and electric vehicles are no different. For the price tag, these new models deliver, and it's likely to turn the heads of consumers desperate for something more fun and comfortable on their way to work.
More affordable brands such Omoda and Leapmotor offer driver assistant safety tools, voice control software and interactive touchscreen displays for under £25,000 brand new. Give it a few more years when depreciation kicks in and this could all be available on the second hand market for under £10,000.
Take a look at XPeng's sublime Dual 14.96" 2.4K floating display screen and its a glimpse into the future of what interiors could and should look like. It's not only inside the vehicle where China is leading the way in consumer technology withBYD revolutionising Vehicle to Load technology.
This acts as a mobile power source, using the vehicle's battery to power external devices. However, it can also be used to top-up other electric vehicles, making you can share some of your battery with friends or family after a day out.
China is also leading the way on battery technology with brands pushing the boundaries of innovation. Zeekr has worked on a new Golden Battery with rapid charging speeds. The 75kWh prismatic LFP power pack can reach from 10 to 80 per cent charge in just 10 and a half minutes.
Meanwhile. Nio is pursuing battery-swap technology in China with over 3,000 stations now installed across the country. With the brand hoping to expand into the UK in 2026, it's not too long until similar technology could be available on Britain's roads.
Chinese brand Jaecoo could be perfect for those wanting to travel long distances with Chery's Super Hybrid System offering 745 miles of range.
As a result, Jaecoo has achieved incredible sales in 2025 with over 18,000 models rolling out of forecourts in the first year in the UK alone. China has focused on technology so far, and it could put them streets ahead of Western brands in the coming years.
