Those looking for a new film to watch should consider this drama that has been described as captivating, enchanting, and a masterpiece. Emily is a biographical drama based on the life of the English writer Emily Brontë, best known for her 1847 novel, Wuthering Heights. It stars Emma Mackey, playing Emily, Fionn Whitehead, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Alexandra Dowling, Amelia Gething, Adrian Dunbar, and Gemma Jones.
The part-fictitious film has an impressive score of 87% on film review website Rotten Tomatoes, where critics describe it as "a biopic that manages to feel true while taking entertaining creative liberties," and it's not just the critics that have praised it - fans absolutely love it too.
The film imagines Emily Brontë's personal story that inspired Wuthering Heights and focuses on a fictional romantic relationship between the writer and young curate William Weightman.
One fan who left a review on Google was particularly moved by the film, resulting in them giving it five stars.
They wrote: "OMG - I've never been so deeply touched by this masterpiece of a movie! It was set in a landscape of the barren realities that women endured, of that time, and the brilliant and unique mind that slowly emerged through a series of limiting etiquette rituals and accidental joys of Emily's life and experience.
"The realities of this young woman's life and her genius were so subtly and perfectly captured and represented - so rich, so stunning! Absolutely - 5-Stars!"
Fans over on Rotten Tomatoes were also highly impressed by the film, despite some criticism that the story is "not accurate".
One person said: "This is a beautifully imagined portrait of Emily Brontë. It is apparently a fictionalised account designed to illustrate and explain a genius who lived far from the cultural and literary centres of England, but who nonetheless succeeded in writing one of the most epic and well-read English novels.
"I found this characterisation enchanting and captivating. The script, acting, and cinematography are outstanding. I found the movie beautiful and fascinating!"
A second wrote: "I know some people say this isn't accurate, but it's such an amazing story. Great acting as well. I absolutely loved it."
It's not just film enthusiasts who loved it; many top critics also praised the film, with many highlighting Emma Mackey's strong performance.
Associated Press wrote: "A bold and audacious retelling of Emily Brontë's life starring an uncommonly compelling Emma Mackey."
While, Austin Chronicle described the star as "utterly magnetic".
Emily is currently available to rent on Amazon Prime for £3.49, or to buy for £7.99. The film is also available on Netflix, but account holders' last chance to watch it on the platform is today (Wednesday, October 22).
