Mini-series have become more and more popular over the years. They are easy to watch and can even be binge-watched in a day. And that's exactly the case for what many call "the best sports documentary ever made". What made the mini-series even more special is that it came out during the Covid pandemic and gave people a much-needed distraction from what was going on in the world at the time.
The series we're talking about is The Last Dance. It is a 2020 sports documentary mini-series co-produced by ESPN Films and Netflix. Directed by Jason Hehir, it follows the career of Michael Jordan, with a main focus on the 1997-98 season, which was his final year with the Chicago Bulls.
It features never-before-seen footage and interviews with teammates including Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman and Steve Kerr, as well as coach Phil Jackson.
It was first shown on ESPN in the US, with episodes later released on Netflix worldwide.
The 10-part series became an instant hit with sports fans, and it currently holds a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
One reviewer said: "If you're a sports fan you will absolutely love this masterpiece miniseries. It doesn't matter if you're into basketball or not. Watch it!"
Another added: "Bloody hell! That was fantastic! I haven't seen a sports documentary as good since Leon Gast's 1996 epic 'When We Were Kings'."
A third wrote: "Absolutely awesome! There are times in life when you hear a song that brings back memories of the years gone by, but there has never been anything on television to achieve that feeling, until now.
"The Last Dance has finally answered so many questions I often wondered about when they happened back then."
One more said: "One of the best sports documentaries I have seen in my life."
Another added: "The Last Dance is more than just a sports documentary, it's an inspiring and life-changing story of resilience, discipline, and greatness."
And one viewer simply said: "Three words - Best. Documentary. Ever. There is so much detail, it really informed me and I got to learn things about MJ that I did not know.
"It does not only focus on his NBA career, it sometimes focuses on his personal career as well. The producers make things easy to understand."
The series won a Primetime Emmy and was praised for its editing and direction. But it did face criticism too, mainly from Jordan's former teammates who felt they were portrayed unfairly.
Still, many fans continue to call it a masterpiece and a must-watch for all sports lovers.
The Last Dance is available to stream now on Netflix.
