Netflix viewers have been left in "tears" from a popular TV series that is blowing its audience away. Stranger Things is an American television series that combines a mix of horror, drama, science fiction, mystery and coming-of-age genres. It was created by the Duffer Brothers and produced by Monkey Massacre Productions and 21 Laps Entertainment. The first season was released in 2016, and now, the fifth and final season is expected to be released in three parts over the course of November and December, later this year.
Stranger Things has quickly become one of the most successful series to come out of Netflix. It stars Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin and Natalia Dyer, among many others.
The series synopsis reads: "Stranger Things is a Netflix sci-fi horror series set in the 1980s, centred on the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, where a young boy's disappearance uncovers a series of supernatural events tied to secret government experiments and a mysterious alternate dimension called the Upside Down. The story follows the boy's desperate search by his mother, the police chief, and his friends, who are aided by a psychokinetic girl escaping the Hawkins National Laboratory."
The popular series has a hugely impressive 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The critics' consensus states: "Exciting, heartbreaking, and sometimes scary, Stranger Things acts as an addictive homage to Spielberg films and vintage 1980s television."
One critic wrote: "Stranger Things is a rare example of a cultural phenomenon that has delivered wistfulness and familiarity without simply giving audiences more of the same."
"In the hands of its directors, the Duffer Brothers, Stranger Things is at turns touching (when it explores teenage love and friendship) and harrowing (when it follows the creature that turns out to be terrorising the town)," added another.
The series has garnered a massive fandom and has been described as a "masterpiece" by many of its viewers.
One fan said it brought them to tears, stating: "I love this show so much, especially this season. Dustin is the goat. The ending made me cry."
Stranger Things is available to stream on Netflix.
